• MTV Video Music Awards 2019

26th August was the day of the 36th edition of the MTV Video Music Awards ceremony. It was held in New Jersey and the host was Sebastian Maniscalco.

Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift were the most nominated artists this year. Each of them got 3 awards: Ariana Grande for Artist of the Year, Best Art Direction (for the song “7 Rings”)and Song of Summer (that would be “Boyfriend”, in case you’re wondering) and miss Swift for Best Visual Effects (for her tune “Me”), Video of the Year & Video for Good (for “You Need to Calm Down”).

The same amount of astronaut statues was given to Billie Eillish. The 17-year-old singer won the prizes for Best New Artist, Push Artist of the Year, Best Editing (for “Bad Guy”). Missie Elliot won the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. The first-ever Fashion Trailblazer Аward was given to the one and only Marc Jacobs.

Who wore what on the red carpet?

Taylor Swift donned a chic retro look in Versace. Camila Cabello was sweet and romantic in Balmain. Halsey was extravagant – not just because of her Dundas outfit, but also because of the rainbow in her hair. In her own words, FKA Twigs was “the lady and the unicorn”.

Shawn Mendes tried to look hot in an emerald green Dolce & Gabbana suit, Rick Ross was screaming Gucci all over the place, Diplo showed a unique custom ensemble from The Elder Statesman and Lenny Kravitz tried to look like… well, Lenny Kravitz. And he nailed it!

  • Royal Warrants

You know that you can add the items that you like on remixshop.com to your Favourites list, right? Did you also know that the Royal Family is allowed to do the same thing? Well, almost the same. Let’s see what Royal Warrants are.

“A Royal Warrant of Appointment is a mark of recognition of those who have supplied goods or services to the Households of Her Majesty The Queen, His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh or His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales for at least five years, and who have an ongoing trading arrangement. The Monarch decides who may grant Royal Warrants. These are known as the Grantors: HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH The Prince of Wales.“

So let’s have a look at some of the most interesting Royal Warrants out there:

    Heinz Foods
Mayo is bad for you. Say whaaat? It has a Royal Warrant. Therefore – good for you.

    Angostura’s Bitter
It’s no secret that The Queen enjoys having a good drink for lunch. And by drink, we mean gin, not Earl Grey tea. So no wonder we are adding bitters tothe list.

    Bacardi Martini
And in caseyou thought that bitters were the only alcoholic drink, think again. There is vermouth too.

    John Walker & Sons
    And there is scotch whisky.

We are sure that Twinings is everything but unusual holder of a royal warrant. We simply had toinclude it.

    James Purdey & Sons
The British gunmaker is a royal weapon of choice. Helps for self-defence (in case those Windsor walls of 30 metres are not enough).

    Gordon’s Gin
Did someone say enough with the alcoholic beverages?

If you were a member of the Royal Family, what would you like to include in the winners’ list?

  • Designer Remix: Vera Wang

“I want people to see the dress but focus on the woman.”

    – Vera Wang

Mother of two. Woman. Designer. Inspiration. Femininity. Elegance. Vera Wang is all that combined.

Vera Ellan Wang was born in 1949 in New York City. She has Chinese roots – both her parents were born in China, but they moved to New York in the 40s. At the age of 9, she started figure skating and competed professionally for several years. She failed to enter the United States Olympic team. Such a fortunate turn of events for so many brides out there…

Vera was hired as a fashion editor at Vogue right after she graduated from college, which made her the youngest editor at the magazine. She worked there for 17 years and then started a job at Ralph Lauren in 1987. Two years later, miss Wang designed her own wedding dress, became missus Wang, designed an entire collection, opened a wedding boutique and became an independent bridal wear designer.

Her first prêt-à-porter collection was launched in 2000, followed by a fragrance and a wedding guide in 2001. She designed the wedding dresses of some of the most popular contemporary women – Alicia Keys, Victoria Beckham, Mariah Carey, Avril Lavigne and many more. And even though she didn’t make it to the US Olympic team as a figure skater, she made it as a designer for several stars on the ice rink. In 2009, Vera Wang entered the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame for her contribution.

She has been honored with many other awards for her achievements, including the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s Womenswear Designer Award (2005) and Lifetime Achievement Awards (2013).

  • Style Remix: Chris Evans

Have you ever asked yourselves the question “What would Captain America do”? No? Truth be told, we haven’t done it either. But many Americans have. Belated happy birthday, Captain America, also known as Chris Evans!

Christopher Robert Evans was born on June 13, 1981, in Boston, Massachusetts. After graduating from high school in his hometown, he moved to New York where he took theatre classes. 1997 was the year of his first appearance on television in the short film Biodiversity: Wild About Life! Seven years later, he was offered the leading role in the films The Perfect Score and Cellular.

His first superhero role was in 2005 in Fantastic Four – a film based on the Marvel Comics (little we all knew back then, the Marvel Cinematic Universe in his life was just beginning).

Chris co-starred alongside Keanu Reeves in Street Kings in 2008. He also appeared in two comic-book adaptations – The Losers in 2010 and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, also in 2010.

The premiere of Captain America: The First Avenger was in 2011. Iron Man, Hulk and Thor joined him a year later, in 2012, for The Avengers. The next solo chapters for the Captain were Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. The entire crew gathered again for Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015, Avengers: Infinity War in 2018 and Avengers: Endgame in 2019.

Apart from his superpowers, Evans is famous for his love for animals. While filming the title Giftedin a shelter, Chris adopted a dog. Just like that, he found it inbetween the scenes.

One year later, the singer presented two clothing lines in collaboration with the label: the first one during New York Fashion Week and the second one – during Paris Fashion Week. Rihanna’s collections for the brand are inspired by Japanese street culture. The designs (shoes, clothing, bags and accessories) are bold and naïve, they mix street style with sports vibes.

  • Designer Remix: Valentino

Even if you haven’t heard of Valentino Clemente Ludovico Garavani, you have heard of Maison Valentino and the trademark “Valentino red”.

Valentino Garavani was born in 1932 in Vogera (Italy, of course). He began to study fashion in Milan, then moved to the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. When he had to pick an apprenticeship, his first choice was Jacques Fath, then Christóbal Balenciaga.

His first collection was presented in 1959, and his first couture collection – in 1962 in Florence (the fashion capital at the time). There and then, he began to earn his international reputation. By the mid 60s, Valentino was the favourite designer of some of the world’s best-dressed women, including Jacqueline Kennedy and Elizabeth Taylor.

The designer opened his first shop in Milan in 1969. The following year he opened stores in Rome and New York. Valentino Garavani became known for his dresses in a very bright red shade – a shade which will always remain in the history of fashion as “Valentino red”. Some of his famous clients are Anne Hathaway and Princess Madeleine of Sweden (they both wore wedding dresses designed by him).

In 2006, Valentino Garavani received the French Legion of Honour medal. He retired in 2008. At the Venice Film Festival the following year Matt Tyrnauer presented the movie Valentino: The Last Emperor. In 2016, was Pierpaolo Piccioli was appointed sole Creative Director of Maison Valentino.

  • Style Remix: Elizabeth II

You know that our Style Remix column is dedicated to the style of celebrities that we like. Usually, those celebrities also have a birthday when we share the blog posts on their biography and style.

In this blog post: Her Majesty Elizabeth II, Queen of England, who is celebrating her 93rd birthday this Sunday! 👑

Instead of digging deeper in history, we are gathering a few charming and yet weird facts about The Queen.

    • She was coronated in 1953. She is currently the longest-reigning British monarch.
    • She didn’t go to school (but don’t tell your kids next time their alarm rings at 6 am). She was tutored at home.
    • The start of her public duties was during the Second World War when she joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service.
    • At the end of the war, Elizabeth II did some partying. Okay, that’s a bit exaggerated. But she and her sister Margaret did go out and mingled anonymously with the crowds in the streets of London in order to celebrate.

    • She has two birthdays. Pretty cool, huh? Her actual birthday (the one that we are talking about at the moment, obviously) in on 21 April, but the official public celebration in on the second Saturday of June. Simply because the weather is warmer for celebrations, of course.
    • She doesn’t need a passport to travel. The logic is simple: all British passports are issued in the Queen’s name, so technically she doesn’t need one. Same goes for driver licenses and Her Majesty’s lack of one.
    • She fancies a drink before lunch. She likes to have a gin mixed with Dubbonet wine with a slice of lemon on the rocks. Rumor has it she also has a glass of champagne every evening.

    • She uses her purse as a secret weapon! Not as a literal weapon, but a report suggests that she uses her handbag to send signals to her staff – to exit a meeting, to be rescued from an unpleasant conversation. Are you jealous already?
    • She usually wears bright colours. Not because her royal stylist ran out of neutrals, but because she must be easily spotted at public events – even from the most distant spectators.

    Happy (first-in-2019) birthday, Your Majesty!

  • The shortest marriages in Hollywood

When it comes to drama, scandals, successful PR and love, Hollywood has it all: from high school sweethearts and unbelievable age difference to more than half a dozen divorces (such an example is Elizabeth Taylor, in case you are wondering).

Today, we are talking about the shortest marriages history has known in the past decades. It turns out that some people did not live happily ever after.

Who: Drew Barrymore & Jeremy Thomas
    Duration: 39 days
The two married in 1994. They knew each other for 6 weeks before they made it official.
What we learned from that story? Sometimes 6 weeks is not enough!

Who: Axl Rose & Erin Everly
    Duration: 26 days
You’ve probably seen Erin in Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child O Mine” video.
What we learned from that story? Being a sweet child is not enough.

Who: Eddie Murphy & Tracey Edmonds
    Duration: 14 days
Even though there was no legal ceremony, the couple exchanged wedding vows in Bora-Bora in 2008.
What we learned from that story? Sometimes Doctor Do-little becomes Doctor Marry-little.

    Who: Cher & Greg Allman
    Duration: 9 days
They married in Vegas in 1975, but Cher had to file for divorce 9 days later quoting Allman’s substance abuse as a reason for the separation.
What we learned from that story? You don’t use substances if you want to be married to Cher, as simple as that.

Who: Nicolas Cage & Erika Kioke
    Duration: 4 days
That was actually the relationship which inspired this material, as the ceremony happened a week ago.
What we learned from that story? Fourth time is not a charm, especially when it comes to marriages.

Who: Britney Spears & Jason Alexander
    Duration: 55 hours
In case you thought 4 weeks in a short period of time to be married to a certain someone, try 55 hours. Britney and her childhood friend tied the knot in 2004, but she “lacked understanding of her actions”, as the official papers say.
What we learned from that story? Oops!.. she did it again – she got married later that same year.

  • Style Remix: Juliette Binoche

It’s been a while since we talked about that je-ne-sais-quoi type of sensuality which only French women have. This week, we are celebrating the natural charisma of Juliette Binoche. Madame Binoche just celebrated her 55th birthday.

Juliette Binoche was born in 1964 in Paris. Her father is French and her mother was born in Poland. When she was 17, Juliette studied in a couple of conservatories in Paris and she starred in a student production of Exit the Kingby Eugène Ionesco. She even studied acting in the Conservatoire National Supérieur d’Art Dramatique, but she quit a short time after she started. After several theatre plays, a job as a saleswoman in one of the biggest stores in Paris and a couple of TV ads, Juliette Binoche made her cinema debut in Liberty Belle (1983).

In the same year, Binoche auditioned for the leading role in Godard’s Hail Mary. It was finally given to Myriem Roussel, but Juliette still got to play in the film. Several French titles later, in 1986, the actress was nominated for her first César Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for Rendez-Vous.

Her debut in the English cinematography was with the film The Unbearable Lightness of Being – Philip Kaufman’s adaptation of the eponymous novel by Milan Kundera. The film gained worldwide recognition.

In case you haven’t watched Three Colours: Blue (1993), The English Patient (1996), Chocolat (2000), Let the Sunshine In (2017), you must definitely do it as soon as possible. They are all great and Juliette stars in all of them.

What is going on in Juliette’s personal life? 2 children, 4 serious partners in life (that we know of) and a lot of activism for the French charity Enfants d’Asie (Children of Asia). She is also a painter – you can enjoy some of her works in the films Les Amants du Pont-Neuf (1991) and Words and Pictures (2013). Moreover, she manages to look effortlessly chic every time she makes an appearance!

  • The legacy of Karl Lagerfeld

Ultimate innovator, creative legend, style icon. Karl Lagerfeld was all that. And so much more.

In order to pay a tribute to the legacy this creative genius left behind, we gathered some of his most inspirational quotes.

“When I took over Chanel, everybody said to me, ‘Don’t touch it. It’s dead. There’s nothing you can do.’ And I said to myself, ‘I love that people think that. Now let’s see.”

“I am a black diamond, unfaceted. Black diamonds are rare, hard to cut, and therefore uncommercial.”

“Vanity is the healthiest thing in life.”

“I get along with everyone except for men my age, who are bourgeois or retired or boring, and cannot follow the evolution of time and mood.”

“People I’m really friendly with have faxes. Anna Wintour has one.”

“Improvise. Become more creative. Not because you have to, but because you want to. Evolution is the secret for the next step.”

“Is there something healthier than competition? If not, you fall asleep and think success, and what you did, is granted. Nothing is granted in fashion, and this is what I love about fashion.”

“I am very much down to Earth. Just not this Earth.”

“What I’ve done, Coco Chanel would never have done. She would have hated it.”

We can’t guarantee about mademoiselle Gabrielle Bonheur Coco Chanel, but we absolutely love everything he has done.

    Rest in peace, Karl Lagerfeld.
