• MTV Video Music Awards 2019

26th August was the day of the 36th edition of the MTV Video Music Awards ceremony. It was held in New Jersey and the host was Sebastian Maniscalco.

Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift were the most nominated artists this year. Each of them got 3 awards: Ariana Grande for Artist of the Year, Best Art Direction (for the song “7 Rings”)and Song of Summer (that would be “Boyfriend”, in case you’re wondering) and miss Swift for Best Visual Effects (for her tune “Me”), Video of the Year & Video for Good (for “You Need to Calm Down”).

The same amount of astronaut statues was given to Billie Eillish. The 17-year-old singer won the prizes for Best New Artist, Push Artist of the Year, Best Editing (for “Bad Guy”). Missie Elliot won the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. The first-ever Fashion Trailblazer Аward was given to the one and only Marc Jacobs.

Who wore what on the red carpet?

Taylor Swift donned a chic retro look in Versace. Camila Cabello was sweet and romantic in Balmain. Halsey was extravagant – not just because of her Dundas outfit, but also because of the rainbow in her hair. In her own words, FKA Twigs was “the lady and the unicorn”.

Shawn Mendes tried to look hot in an emerald green Dolce & Gabbana suit, Rick Ross was screaming Gucci all over the place, Diplo showed a unique custom ensemble from The Elder Statesman and Lenny Kravitz tried to look like… well, Lenny Kravitz. And he nailed it!

  • Happy French Fries Day

There is something gloriously magical about the French Fry – crispy, crunchy, salty, flavourful and downright delicious. Yet, we are so often told by health gurus to stay away from them, each time we choose to indulge, the inevitable guilt trip follows, ruining the entire experience. Bad or not, July 13th is the International French Fries Day and the time to give them some well-deserved praise.

The French and the Belgians have long disputed the origin of the fry, though we have to give it to the Belgians for elevating french-fry-eating to a whole new level of awesomeness with their friteries – fast food heavens, serving fries with huge selections of dips and condiments.

All over the world you will find various interpretations of the fry, either as a stand-alone or as a sidekick. The Britsh love it with fish in their classic fish & chips combo. The Spanish prefer it in a tapas format, called patatasfritas or patatasbravas, both of which go down brilliantly with lots of wine and chitchat. The Canadians take pride in their “poutine” (pronounced just like the Russian president, oddly enough), which consists of fries in cheese curds and gravy sauce. Something rather similar is the Chilean Chorrillana – fries topped with meat and fried eggs in a massive portion for sharing with someone you like just enough to give your fries to.

    Dnia Frytek

If there is one day in the year when you can enjoy your fries completely guilt-free, it should be on their International Holiday, July 13th. So go ahead, we dare you, and do it in your favourite way – with or without fish, covered in cheese, dipped in mayo or flooded in ketchup, with a burger or just as they are: plain and divine. And maybe shared with someone close.

  • Independence Day menu

We may not be celebrating the USA’s Independence Day on 4th of July, but we have a thing for those family gatherings all Americans enjoy so much.

If you need a reason to have one such garden party, you will need a special menu. We have some proposals for you. Veggie lovers, at the end of the menu there are treats for you too.

An authentic barbeque just won’t do without burgers! Classic cheeseburgers with or without bacon are the way to go.

    Hot dogs

Hot dogs are also a must. In order to crank them up a notch, add some pineapple salsa. It’s super easy to make: mix pineapple, chili peppers, red onion, salt and black pepper.

Prepare some garlic powder, black pepper, salt and barbeque sauce. Back to ribs, back to the country life!

    Chicken wings

Make them hot & spicy and add some homemade fries or coleslaw salad with cabbage and carrots.

    Macaroni & cheese

One of the most American meals out there. You need curved (elbow) macaroni, butter, flour, cheddar cheese, salt and milk in order to make a creamy and dreamy version of the mac & cheese.

    Classic potato salad

    >> potatoes, corn, mayonnaise, red onion, mustard, pickles, lemon juice, boiled eggs

    Grilled corn

    Bacon-wrapped, cheddar-topped, barbeque-dipped. Don’t be afraid of any ingredients.

You are ready for a tasty celebration!

  • Tony Awards 2019

The hype about the Tony Awards is nothing compared to the atmosphere surrounding the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes or the MTV Music Awards. But that is an unforgivable oversight. Broadway with its 41 super professional theatres in New York and the artists that achieve absolute perfection on their stages – that’s what the Tony Awards are all about.

Perhaps most of you don’t know that the official name of the Tony Award is Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre. The medallions are named after Antoinette “Tony” Perry, the co-founder of the American Theatre Wing.

Let’s see what were the highlights during this year’s ceremony.

The location was Radio City Music Hall in New York. The colourful show was hosted by James Corden. Hadestown received the Best Musical award, Oklahoma! was the Best Revival of a Musical and The Ferryman won in the Best Play category.

Hadestown won seven more Tony medallions, so perhaps you are willing to learn a bit more about it. As the name suggests, the musical is an adaptation of the ancient Greek myth for Orpheus and Eurydice – the one where Orpheus journeys to the underworld in order to save his fiancée. Eva Noblezada (Eurydice) didn’t win the prize for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical – even though she was a nominee in that category – but André De Shields who portrayed Hermes got the award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical.

What happened on the red carpet? The most memorable appearances were those of Billy Porter in a custom Celestine Couture outfit, Rachel Brosnahan in Christian Dior, Adam Driver (we are not sure who the designer he picked was; we only know that he nailed the black tux), Sophia Anne Caruso in Pamela Rolland and last but not least – Lucy Liu in Christian Siriano.

  • Summer festivals in Europe 2019

Summer is definitely the festival season, but instead of talking about music festivals you have all heard of, we decided to show you some other interesting events in Europe you can also visit this summer.

    Flow Festival, Helsinki, Finland

Wonder what’s the best time to visit Helsinki? Definitely during the summer season and especially between 9 and 11 August, when the Flow Festival takes place. The fest is best known for its sustainable organization, which aims to leave a zero-carbon footprint, present sustainable meals, use 100% recycled materials, protect the Baltic Sea and create a safe space, where everybody can enjoy their stay.

    World Bodypainting Festival, Klagenfurt, Austria

World Bodypainting Festival in Klagenfurt is the place where art meets modernity. The magical show program brings together over 300 artists to celebrate visual culture through creative body paintings. The event will be held between 11 and 13 July.

    Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Edinburgh, Scotland

Founded in 1947, The Fringe is the world’s biggest art festival which shows works of artists from all over the world. During almost a month (2 – 26 August), Fringe will present thousands of shows, covering every single form of art (theatre, dance, cabaret, opera, music, exhibitions and installations, etc.). Don’t hesitate to visit the festival this year.

The Road Junky Festival of Creativity, Czech Republic

Do you like the emotions of a festival, but prefer less crowded places? This one might be just for you. More like a family gathering than a festival, The Road Junky Festival of Creativityis an alcohol- and smartphone-free place, where people connect with themselves and with each other. With its many creative workshops and activities, which occur during a 10day period (June 21 – July1), the festival makes a creative runaway from the everyday life and opens more space for self-expression.

Corso de la Lavande – Lavender festival in Digne-les-Bains, Provence, France

If you happen to be in France during the period 3 -7 August, you should definitely visit the Lavender festival in Digne. During the 4 days you will see various thematic performances – from the members of the Commanderie de la Lavande dressed in purple robes and felted hats, to the colourfully decorated tractors, trucks, ships and even Provence houses with their yards. You could also try the regional lavender honey, biscuits, syrup and paté.

    Vazdukharia aircraft festival, Sopot, Bulgaria

This one of a kind Balkan gliding festival takes place between 6 and 8 September in Sopot. Vazdukharia gathers pilots of unpowered aircrafts from around the world and fans of air space activities. Apart from flying with a paraglider, hang glider, balloon or other engineless aircraft, you could enjoy aerial acrobatics and the art program with different workshops and music shows.

    Pizza Village festival, Naples, Italy

Pizza Village in Naples is (probably) the most delicious festival you will ever visit. It is also the world’s largest pizza celebration and has taken place every year since 1995. This year, the fest will also mark the end of summer. During the period 13 – 22 September, Naples will become the most desirable place in Europe, where pizza is available in its many different shapes, sizes and flavours in original Neapolitan style, as well as various bite-worthy interpretations of Italian pizzaiolos.

  • Met Gala 2019

When it comes to imagination, unusual design and extravaganza, the Met Gala (also known as the Met Ball) is the cherry on top of the pie. And when it comes to the sprinkles on top of that cherry, Met Gala 2019 gets the first place!

The annual fundraising event took place on May 6th at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The theme? “Camp: Notes of Fashion”. In case you are not familiar with the concept, camp is an aesthetic style that regards something as appealing because of its bad taste and ironic value.

Who owned the red carpet? It’s a really hard decision, given the fact we saw so many extravagant outfits. Our favourite celebrities picked ensembles which were ostentatious, exaggerated, theatrical, bold, naïve and flamboyant. Here is our final countdown…

    10: Golden glitter

Emily Blunt and Rita Ora were looking good, good as gold. Blunt wore a Michael Kors Collection dress, while the Kosovo-born singer chose a sequined Marc Jacobs creation.

    9: Feathers

Pastel pink, Barbie pink… pink feathers were the weapon of choice for Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (in a custom Oscar de la Renta dress) and Naomi Campbell (in Valentino).

    7: Significant hair-pieces

Ciara definitely won the award for best hair during this year’s Met Ball. The situation is the following: 60% Ciara, 40% Ciara’s hair. We definitely want to know the secret behind that volume, can’t be just the shampoo.

    6: Fairytales

Florence Welch (from “Florence + The Machine”) looked like a queen warrior, Emily Ratajkowski was a princess elf and Saoirse Ronan was the brave emperor who rules the fairytale land where they all live … and also wears Gucci.

    5: Fear of colour

To be more precise, lack of said fear. Vogue’s European editor-at-large Hamish Bowles, Cara Delevingne and Lupita Nyong’O proved they are brave human beings.

2: More than a double vision

If we were seeing double with Jared, we are in a real-life hallucination with Ezra Miller and his insanely eye-popping optical illusion look. The Burberry suit with rhinestone corset proved once again why he is one of the brightest male fashion icons we have seen lately.

  • Earth Hour 2019

Earth Hour is an international movement organized by WWF (The World Wide Fund for Nature). It usually falls on the last Saturday of March and it has been encouraging us all as individuals and as businesses to turn off the electrical lights for one hour – from 8:30 to 9:30 pm (Eastern European Time).

The first Earth Hour was held in 2007 in Sydney, Australia. Earth Hour 2008 was held internationally in 35 countries. In 2018, more than 188 countries and territories took part in the initiative.

This year, WWF is expecting a new world record in terms of participation. The slogan of the campaign is Together, let’s connect to Earth:

“We love this planet and everything that lives upon it. Join us and, together, let’s spark never-before-had conversations on nature and the unique diversity of life we share our home with!
What better way to celebrate than with the electrifying energy of Earth Hour as it sweeps across the planet? Remember to switch off in solidarity with global efforts to secure nature and our home: 30 March, 8:30pm your time. It’s time to #Connect2Earth.”

Here are a few ideas for the celebration that are easy, simple and quite pleasant:

    1. Candle-lit dinner
We don’t really care if you have a boyfriend/girlfriend or not – you are a strong, independent individual and you deserve some romance even if you’re not hosting a party at home.

    2. Candle-lit bubble bath
It’s more relaxing than the normal bubble bath, plus it saves energy. A candle-lit shower will also do the trick 😉

    3.Candle-lit yoga
You don’t need some lady on YouTube to tell you what routine to follow – the practice is very individual, so just put your yoga mat on the floor and do your favourite asanas // meditate // just lie down and try to relax with your eyes closed.

    4. Candle-lit party
You still have a couple of days to send your closest friends an invitation for a small gathering dedicated to Earth Hour 2019. Just make them RSVP before 20:30 on Saturday, as you won’t be able to answer the phone afterwards.

    Let’s connect to Earth!

  • Recycled medals in Tokyo 2020

At the moment, the hype about summer 2020 is stronger than the hype about summer 2019. The reason? The XXXII Olympic games, also known as Tokyo 2020.

So far, The Summer Olympic Games have been hosted in 19 countries: The United States, the United Kingdom, Greece, France, Germany, Australia, Sweden, Belgium, Netherlands, Finland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Canada, the former Soviet Union, South Korea, Spain, China and Brazil.

Next year, the multi-sport event will take place from 24 July to 9 August in Tokyo, Japan. As usual, gold medals will be awarded for first place, silver medals – for second place, and bronze medals – for third place (an old tradition dating back to 1904). But what will be different in 2020? Green medals, that’s what!

The Tokyo 2020 Medal Project: Towards an innovative future for all aims to manufacture the medals for the winners of the sports games from consumer electronics such as smartphones, cameras and laptops. The project is an excellent way for citizen involvement: the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee asked for the help of people from municipalities all over Japan. As a result, more than 45 000 tons of devices have been received. With this project, the committee will manufacture around 5000 gold, silver and bronze medals for the Olympic and Paralympic games.

During the last Olympic games (in Rio de Janeiro in 2016), around 30% of silver and bronze medals were made from recycled materials. Tokyo 2020 is definitely taking this challenge to the next level!

  • Academy Awards 2019

The most spectacular awards are here for the Grande Finale of the month. Let’s see what happened during the 2019 Academy Awards ceremony!

As usual, the most discussed categories were Best Director, Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Actress in a Leading Role.

The first winner is Alfonso Cuaron for his film Roma. Rami Malek got the award for best actor for Bohemian Rhapsody and Olivia Colman beat the other nominees with her performance in The Favourite.

Even though Black Panther did not win in the Best Picture category (the award was given to Green Book), it was the winner for Best Original Score and Best Costume Design. “Shallow” got Lady Gaga and the whole A Star is Born crew another accolade in their 2019 list, this time for Best Original Song. Mahershala Ali is officially the Best Actor in a Supporting Role with his performance in Green Book. As for the ladies in the same category – the winner is Regina King for If Beale Street Can Talk.

Another trophy for Green Book is the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. The award for best adapted screenplay went to BlacKkKlansman.

The red carpet… was actually pink. A lot of actresses opted for pink gowns: Sarah Paulson in Brandon Maxwell, Gemma Chan in Valentino Couture, Helen Mirren in Schiaparelli, Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet in Karl Lagerfeld, Julia Robers in Elie Saab and many more.

In the non:pink palette we have to mention Charlize Theron’s turtleneck Dior dress, Lady Gaga’s beauty by Alexander McQueen and Emma Stone’s sparkling Louis Vuitton gown.

Who is your winner for the night?
